Silage solutions – high-quality silage for higher farm profit

Ensiling is the preservation of forage crops (grass, corn, grains) through lactic acid fermentation in an air-free environment.

The nutritional value of the feed, livestock health, and farm profit directly depend on the quality of the ensiling process. RVAC offers silage solutions – suitable silage additives (preservatives) and specialist consultation to ensure your silage is nutritious, stable, and experiences the lowest possible losses.

Why use silage additives

Even in well-compacted silage, some nutrients are lost due to improper fermentation, molds, yeasts, and secondary (aerobic) spoilage. A properly selected silage additive helps to address this.

Improve aerobic stability – opened silage does not overheat and resists spoilage for a longer period.
Reduce nutrient losses during the ensiling and storage process.
Increase energy value – using additives can increase the energy value of grass silage by 0.3–0.5 MJ NEL/kg of dry matter.
Improve fermentation – quickly acidifies the mass and inhibits harmful microorganisms (clostridia, molds, yeasts).
Increase feed palatability and productivity – studies show that livestock fed with silage preserved using biological additives consume more feed and grow more rapidly.

Types of silage additives

Biological (bacterial) additives – inoculants
Biological (bacterial) additives – inoculants
These are cultures of lactic acid bacteria (often combined with propionic acid bacteria) that accelerate and direct fermentation in the proper direction. New-generation biological preservatives improve the fermentation process, increase silage digestibility and palatability, and boost livestock productivity. They are suitable when the sugar content in the raw material is sufficient for proper fermentation.
Chemical additives – organic acids
Chemical additives – organic acids
These are organic acids (e.g., formic acid, propionic acid, their combinations, and salts) that directly acidify the mass and inhibit harmful microorganisms. They are especially useful for harder-to-ensile raw materials (wet, protein-rich grass) and for improving aerobic stability.

Solutions by crop

Grass silage

Grass has more protein, fewer easily digestible carbohydrates, and more impurities than corn, making it harder to ferment. Purposefully selected additives are suitable for this, as they accelerate acidification and prevent improper fermentation. The benefits of additives in grass silage are particularly evident – the energy value increases, and losses decrease.

Corn silage

Corn has high sugar content and ensiles well, but after opening the bunker silo, a common problem is aerobic spoilage (heating, yeasts, molds). Here, additives that improve aerobic stability are highly beneficial, ensuring that the opened silage remains high-quality for longer.

Grains and other crops

We also select silage solutions for preserving wet grains and other forage crops, depending on the raw material’s moisture, dry matter content, and storage method.

How to choose the right silage solution

The right additive depends on the crop, raw material moisture, dry matter content, harvesting conditions, and storage method. RVAC feeding and feed specialists will assess your situation and recommend the most effective solution – from the type of additive to dosing. The goal is not just to sell an additive, but to ensure maximum silage quality and return from every hectare.

    Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Silage additives (preservatives) are biological or chemical products added to the ensiled mass to improve fermentation, reduce nutrient losses, and protect the silage from molds, yeasts, and spoilage.

Biological additives are lactic acid bacteria that accelerate natural fermentation. Chemical additives are organic acids that directly acidify the mass and inhibit harmful microorganisms. The right choice depends on the raw material and conditions.

Yes. Additives reduce losses and increase the energy value of the silage (in grass silage – by approximately 0.3–0.5 MJ NEL/kg of DM [dry matter]), which improves livestock productivity and farm profit.

There are additives for grass, corn, and grain silage. Grass silage more often requires fermentation improvement, while corn silage requires aerobic stability improvement. We select the right product based on the crop and conditions.
